Worm Gear Motors Design

Universal Worm Gear Motor Applications

Fast braking or stopping: Backdriving, or reversing the direction of the gears, is difficult with worm gears. Stopping and holding can be possible without an external brake, or a smaller brake system can be used with the worm gear as an emergency braking system. Examples include hoists, elevators, and lifts. Worm gears should not be relied on as a sole method for braking.

Reducing noise: Applications where noise is a concern include airports, theaters, and elevators. The smooth sliding action between the worm gear’s teeth reduces noise and allows for quieter operation than most of other gear motors. Gear worms are made from dissimilar materials, which contributes to their quiet operation.

Smaller spaces: Universal worm gear motors are designed in a way that allows for fewer gear sets to be used in order to achieve the higher required gear ratios for increased torque and reduced speed when needed. With fewer gear sets, the result is a smaller gearbox. Applications where space is a concern, include conveyors, small machinery, and packaging equipment.

Shock loading: Universal gear motors are made up of different materials. In this type of gear motor, one of the gear sets is made of a softer metal, which allows it to easily absorb the energy from sudden shock loads. Examples of applications that require shock loading include rock crushers and other heavy duty machinery.
